Safety Fabrications was approached by working at height specialist PTSG Access & Safety to design and supply a permanent access solution for the roof of a data centre in Reading.
The rooftop contains a range of building services and equipment requiring regular inspection and maintenance, making safe and reliable access essential for maintenance personnel.
The Requirements
The client required permanent rooftop access to support planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities, including the inspection and maintenance of photovoltaic (PV) panels and air-conditioning plant, as well as rooflight inspection and gutter cleaning.
The access solution needed to provide a safe route between levels while accommodating the existing roof hatch and building configuration.
The Solution
Safety Fabrications recommended an Ascent™ Fixed Access Ladder with safety cage to provide permanent access to the rooftop.
At the head of the ladder, PTSG installed a ladder-up post to provide an additional handhold for users when transitioning between the ladder and roof level through the access hatch. This helps provide greater stability at a critical point of access and egress.
The Ascent™ Fixed Access Ladder system can be configured to suit a wide range of buildings and site conditions. Depending on the application, additional features can include intermediate rest platforms, anti-climb protection, self-closing gates and ladder-up posts.
The ladder was installed by PTSG in accordance with the comprehensive installation guidance supplied by Safety Fabrications.
Designed and Manufactured for Safe Access
The Ascent™ Fixed Access Ladder system is designed and tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 14122-4:2016 and manufactured at Safety Fabrications’ Sheffield facility under controlled factory production procedures.
The modular design allows each system to be configured around the specific access requirements of the building, providing a robust and permanent solution for routine inspection, maintenance and rooftop access.
