Tips to Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls in the Workplace

Slips, trips, and falls accounts for a majority of general workplace accidents and injuries. They’re also the most common causes of workers’ compensation claims. Every employer has the responsibility of ensuring the safety of their workforce at all times. Below are some of the ways you can proactively manage your workplace to prevent slips, trips, and falls.

  1. Embrace Good Housekeeping

Good housekeeping is critical. Poor housekeeping practices can increase the chances of employee injuries, regulatory citations and ever-increasing insurance costs. You can easily tell whether your organisation has an effective overall safety program or not. If the facilities are noticeably clean and well organised, there will be minimum incidents of slips, trips, and falls. Housekeeping should be an ongoing procedure that’s done as a part of your employees’ daily performance. Ensure to plan ahead to know what needs to be done, who to handle the task, and how to conduct the exercise.

  1. Provide the Necessary Access Equipment

Step units and ladders can help reduce the chances of tripping and falling by helping your workers reach heights safely. Ensure there are relevant supportive options throughout the workplace to prevent clients and workers from relying on unstable tables, desks, or chairs.

  1. Maintain Proper Lighting

Poor lighting accounts for several slips and trip injuries in the workplace. Ensure to use proper illumination in staircases, basements, hallways, dock areas, and walkways. All areas with poor lighting should be kept clean and clear of clutter and obstructions. Ensure to also repair fixtures, switches and cords as soon as possible when they malfunction and keep areas around light switches clear and accessible. Always turn on the lights before entering a dark room or passageway.

  1. Remove Any Obstacles in Walkways and Aisles

Obstacles, materials, clutter, and equipment in corridors, aisles, stairwells, and entranceways can cause trips and falls. To avoid the proliferation of these types of hazards, you need to have procedures in place for cleaning the areas. Ensure there are no stringing cables, cords, or air hoses across designated aisles and hallways. Encourage your employees to observe safe work practices such as picking up loose items on the floor and closing file cabinet drawers after use.

  1. Reduce Wet or Slippery Surfaces

A significant portion of workplace injuries reported happen on walking surfaces such as food preparation areas, parking lots, shower stalls, sidewalks, and floors in general. You need to keep these surfaces clean and in good repair condition at all times, especially during bad weather like when snow and ice are present. If necessary, suspend use of the affected areas. Use moisture-absorbent mats in entrance areas and ensure they have backing material to prevent them from sliding. You can use adhesive stripping material or anti-skid paint in troublesome areas. Ensure to also put warning signs in places with risk of slips, falls, and falls to alert workers.

  1. Put on Proper Shoes

You need to wear shoes with soles designed to prevent slips, trips, and falls. If the footwear can cause you to slip and fall, avoid wearing the shoes and look for footwear appropriate for the duties of your work task. Ensure to also tie the shoelaces correctly.
