Finishing a Safe Access Solution on a Finnish Church in London

11th June 2019

Here at Safety Fabrications we pride ourselves in providing a bespoke access solution for working at height on buildings across the UK.  We’ve supplied safe access equipment for work at height on hospitals, railway stations, fire stations and even the café on top of Mount Snowdon!  Now we’re adding a church to the list of buildings that feature Safety Fabrications installations – and not just any ordinary church, but the Finnish Church in London.

London’s only Finnish Church is the Finnish Seamen’s Mission and Church (Suomen Merimieskirkko, Finlands Sjömanskyrka) is located on Albion Street in the Rotherhithe area of London.  As well as a place of worship, the church also has a shop that sells Finnish products and hostel accommodation for visitors to the UK capital.

The church and mission were first established in 1882 when a Finnish port chaplain based in Hull was   relocated to London due to the level of work being demanded there.  The church is the third Finnish church built in London and was designed by architect, Cyrill Mardall-Sjöström, initially for a plot in Southwark Park.  However, the plan was interrupted by the outbreak of World War 2 and a new site for the church was later found in Rotherhithe, an area of London with strong   Scandinavian and Nordic connections due to the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish Seamen’s Missions being present in the area.

In order to comply with current health and safety legislation, the church needed to provide a safe access route on the gently sloping roof of the Finnish Church.  This is where the air conditioning unit servicing the church is located and maintenance personnel who undertake regular repair, maintenance and servicing work on the AC unit needed a safe means of accessing the work area to carry out their tasks.

Safety Fabrications were chosen to provide such access – which we did in the form of an Ascent Up & Over step unit that was designed specifically to provide a bespoke solution to ensure the safety of those working at height on the air conditioning unit on the roof.  The Up & Over step unit was supplied in flat pack format so that it could easily be transported to the roof and installed.  The Ascent products supplied to our customers are able to be installed without the need for any specialist training or specifically designed tools, making this a simple and convenient solution for a wide range of applications.

The Safety Fabrications team members are all dedicated to providing our customers with an access solution that is specifically tailored to their individual requirements and we welcome inquiries from commercial and domestic customers – no job is too large or too small and we take pride in providing safe work at height equipment, no matter how complex the installation may be.
