Construction Ambassadors – Why not get Involved?

Construction Ambassadors – Why not get Involved?

10th January 2018

Back in May of 2016 in an article about a career in roofing, we brought you news of GoConstruct, the industry wide initiative that was launched to attract, educate and retain a talented workforce for the construction and Built Environment sector.  The initiative is the brainchild of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) which also established the Construction Ambassador Programme to provide the necessary resources and training to help employers to become Construction Ambassadors and support youngsters to make career choices in our sector.  Today we’re going to take a closer look at Construction Ambassadors, what they do and how they help the industry as a whole.

A Construction Ambassador very often provides the first introduction to the industry for those who are considering their future career choices and it’s vital that they’re able to inspire potential new entrants about the industry and convey what it’s actually like to work in the construction sector here in the UK.  Reaching out to local communities enables Construction Ambassadors to highlight some of the fantastic opportunities for youngsters in construction and construction industry employers across the UK are being urged to consider taking part in the initiative which aims to secure a skilled and talented workforce for our sector in the future, a vital necessity as we face the burgeoning skills shortage in the wake of the Brexit vote.

The CITB is on the lookout for passionate and enthusiastic industry professionals who will act as the public face of the UK construction industry and share their positive experiences with potential new entrants who are considering their career options with a wide range of audiences, including:

·         Schoolchildren in three age brackets (4 – 7 years, 7 – 11 years and 11 – 16 years)

·         Colleges and other further education providers

·         Military

·         Graduates

·         Prisoners and Ex-Offenders

You can apply to become a Construction Ambassador on the GoConstruct website while schools, colleges and careers even organisers can also request that a local Construction Ambassador attends their event to help spread the word about just how fulfilling a career in construction can be.

For those who decide to apply to become a Construction Ambassador, training is provided, along with the necessary support.   The Construction Ambassador training programme is specifically designed to enable the Ambassadors to visit schools and colleges and engage with students.  The training covers topics such as safeguarding and using the GoConstruct website effectively.  This is a challenging, but rewarding role that enables the Ambassadors to be involved in activities such as:

·         Leading site visits

·         Visiting career fairs to raise awareness on careers within the construction industry

·         Mentoring youngsters who enter the construction industry

This is a great opportunity for those who have forged a successful career in construction to pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to the industry’s newest recruits and offers participants the following benefits:

·         Enhanced personal development

·         Raising your company profile within your local area

·         Enhancing or addressing your company’s community benefit targets

If you’re looking to boost your own career to the next level in 2018 and have the enthusiasm and passion necessary to inspire others, what are you waiting for?  Head on over to GoConstruct now to find out how you could become a Construction Ambassador in 2018.
