Asda, Bolton

The Ascent™ Aluminium Walkway was specified to provide safe roof access of the Asda superstore in Bolton.

The Client:

Asda, a Leeds-based retailer with 633 stores across the UK, is owned by the Blackburn-based Issa brothers.

The self-made entrepreneurs began their careers running a local petrol station, which grew into a chain of filling stations known as Euro Garages (EG Group) before becoming the majority stakeholder in Asda.

The Challenge:

With plant and equipment on the roof, as well as central valley gutters, regular planned periodic maintenance is required.

City FM, Asda’s FM provider, appointed Gravity Solutions to help them establish a safe access policy for their roofs.

Gravity Solutions recommended installing the Ascent aluminium access walkway with guardrail as part of this plan.

This provides maintenance personnel with a flat, free-draining, anti-slip walkway surface.

The Solution:

The Ascent™ Aluminium Walkway was provided level to the roof falls where it traverses the roof slope.

The walkway was affixed to the roof sheet with bespoke self-drill fixing screws and a weather-tight washer.

The arrangement enabled the walkway to be attached to the building without the requirement for large-scale penetrations and subsequent weather proofing.

Gravity personnel installed the Ascent™ Aluminium Walkway in accordance with the full installation guidelines provided.

The walkways are designed and tested in accordance with EN 516;2006 and BS EN 14122- 2 &3:2016, and are manufactured at our Sheffield facility to CE / UKCA standards in accordance with BS EN 1090 manufacturing procedures.

Manufactured from 6082-T6 structural grade aluminium, the Ascent™ Aluminium Walkways are 100% recyclable, protecting both the maintenance personnel who use the walkway now and future generations who may wish to re-purpose it at the end of its working life.
