Workplace safety issues can be experienced in almost any field, but they’re particularly prevalent in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and transportation. Building and maintaining a safe work environment should be the priority of every employer and safety officer. You need to actively promote a strong safety culture in your organisation to ensure a successful and effective health and safety program.   1. Ensure All Workers are Properly Trained

All workers should be provided with relevant safety training using the language they understand. This training should be provided to all the new workers and when a worker changes roles with refresher training for existing workers whenever necessary. The workers should be trained on how to use different equipment such as safety ladders correctly to avoid possible accidents and injuries.

Use digital signage to broadcast important safety information, messages, and updates. Unlike static posters, digital signage can be very efficient in emergency situations to instantly warn the workers of a situation, especially where computers and mobile phones aren’t allowed. They can also be used to provide daily or weekly safety tips to remind workers of the importance of workplace safety. HSE posters should also be placed in strategic places such as changing rooms, coffee rooms, and restrooms.

Occupational clinicians can provide valuable insight into workplace injuries and prevention. They can visit your workplace and identify areas with a high risk of accidents and injuries. These clinicians can also improve workplace ergonomics and develop human performance evaluations to help ensure you hire the right candidates, especially for the physically demanding roles.

 

  1. Create a Safety Committee

Having a workplace safety committee can help enhance safety awareness and ensure compliance with the relevant health and safety regulations. The committee should comprise workers from different departments, shop-floor-based employees, and at least a member of the management. The committee should meet regularly to ensure everyone is up to date with the current safety updates, injuries, and illness statistics. These meetings can also be used to address pressing safety matters and employee feedback. This will make employees know that they’re being valued hence encourage them to embrace safety in their daily operations.

Employee buy-in is vital to a positive safety culture. Employees can hardly observe safety measures if the management doesn’t commit to safety. You need to follow all safety policies to encourage your workers to do the same. Safety is more than just talking, you need to prove your seriousness.

Prizes and recognition can also be effective in encouraging workers to observe safety measures at all times. A little fun can make employees more engaged hence helping prevent accidents and injuries.
